(More customer reviews)This LaCie 40 gigabyte external hard drive plugs into any computer with a USB2 plug and comes with a Linux Mandriva desktop system installed. It's a nifty idea if you don't want to be bothered installing the program yourself. You can take the drive, plug it into any computer and have your Mandriva Linux desktop system with you, at home or away.

But in truth, you are better off buying a LaCie 40 GB external hard drive without Mandriva installed. The stand-alone drive ischeaper. You can then download the 2006 Mandriva program onto this drive for free, and have the same system, for less. I recommend the second method for all but the complete techno-idiot.

Mandriva is easy to install. After you select the language in which you want to run, the program pretty much installs itself.

(More customer reviews)I purchased this as recently as this week and I received an email from the seller saying he apologizes about the shipping delays it will incur due to the recent volcanic ash etc etc.15 min later I received another email saying it was shipped - I received it today and was not only amazed by the excellent communication and expedited delivery, but the product was brand new and exactly as described.It houses my S1 Samsung mini HDD and my Sandisk 16gb cruzer thumbdrive perfectly.The cables have their own compartment and there is an extra soft padding separating them from your unit.I even swapped out my HDD with my cellphone and it was ideal as well - I can say it would even house some of the slim pocket cameras.The carabiner was easy to attach and the entire product is very well made and sturdy.Note: It is not metal hard, but soft clamshell hard. Even so, for $13 including s&h, you can't complain.I highly recommend not only the product but the seller as well.

(More customer reviews)All I can say is that it is perfect. It comes with a leather case, USB cable (which has an additional piece for extra power), screws for mounting the HD and a screwdriver. What more do you need? With this package you can have your laptop HD up and running in less than 10 minutes anywhere in the world (because of the screwdriver etc.). Some may complain that the screws are too small. I agree but any bigger and they will compromise the integrity of the enclosure.
One thing I would like is if they can add cooling fins to it since the HD gets hot fast. But in this slim configuration you can get maximum space, since they are easily stackable.

I bought 10 of these so I can have them as backup HDs whenever my laptop HD goes. Therefore I recommend that you partition them with at least enough for the OS and the rest for data. So whenever your main HD fails just take them out, install it in the laptop and reinstall the OS on the first partition leaving the data partition intact.
